LOCAL PHILANTHROPY: DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Subsequent to its Founding, Gamma Pi has functioned boundlessly to promote awareness regarding a variety of injustices and maltreatments present in the community, as well as raising money for, and offering service to, organizations who aid victims of such misfortunes. Their closest working relationship is with SafeSpace Foundation, Inc., a local women’s shelter, which provides a multitude of services to battered women. For the past eight years, Gamma Pi has helped organize the sale of toiletries at their thrift shop, and has donated over twenty bags of clothing and shoes to the women and children who have found safety at the shelter. Amongst those contributions, they also created an annual awareness gala, “Art of Surviving,” in which 100% of the proceeds directly benefit SafeSpace Foundation, Inc., or another domestic violence shelter of our choosing.

In addition to the chapter philanthropy, Gamma Pi makes it a priority to support other causes. Over the years, sisters have participated in the Walk for Myeloma and Out of the Darkness (both hosted by other area chapters), Take Back the Night, Relay for Life, and Miami AIDS Walk. They have served in events hosted by the department of Parks and Recreation of Miami-Dade, SPCA Homestead, DACA, Chapman Partnership, American Heart Association, NOVA Southeastern University, FIU Center for Leadership and Service, FIU Student Organization Council, Campus Life, and FIU Fraternity and Sorority Life. The chapter has also collaborated with Project Downtown, Hands on Miami, Regis House, Miami Children’s Hospital, and the Miami Rescue Mission.

NATIONAL PHILANTHROPY: ST. JUDE CHILDREN’S RESEARCH HOSPITAL

In January of 2010, LTA became an official collegiate partner to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, becoming the first individual Latino Greek organization to commit fully to the hospital’s efforts. With this partnership, LTA provides our resources of community service and activism and more importantly, another direct link to the Hispanic community for St. Jude. LTA has pledged to raise awareness about childhood cancer and St. Jude in the Latin community, as well as fundraise for the hospital through a variety of events and programs. Since 2011 Lambda Theta Alpha has helped raised over $120,000!

About St. Jude

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. St. Jude is the first and only pediatric cancer center to be designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute. Founded by late entertainer Danny Thomas and based in Memphis, TN, St. Jude freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay. St. Jude is financially supported by ALSAC, its fundraising organization. In 2010, St. Jude was ranked the most trusted charity in the nation in a public survey conducted by Harris Interactive, a highly respected international polling and research firm. St. Jude was also named the nation’s top children’s cancer hospital in the 2010-11 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings published by U.S. News & World Report.

Mission

The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures and means of prevention for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion, or a family’s ability to pay.

Vision

The vision of St Jude is to be the world leader in advancing the treatment and prevention of catastrophic diseases in children. This vision will be pursued by providing outstanding patient care; by conducting basic, translational and clinical research designed to elucidate biological mechanisms, understand disease pathogenesis, improve diagnosis, enhance treatment outcome, prevent diseases and minimize adverse consequences of treatment; and by educating health care and scientific research professionals. Through these efforts we seek to cure and enhance the quality of life for an increasing proportion of children who come to us for treatment, and by expanding and sharing knowledge, to advance treatment of children with catastrophic diseases worldwide, while developing strategies to prevent catastrophic diseases in children.
